When does gender identity occur
Phallic stage (3-6yrs) libido moves to genitals
Pre-phallic stage
bisexual - no concept of gender
Oedipus complex
- jealous of father as want mother
- fear father as more powerful and will castrate them if he finds out (castration anxiety)
- resolved when boys give up love for mother and identify with father and internalise his attitudes and values
Electra Complex
- feel competition with mother for father’s love
- resent mother as believe she castrated them (penis envy)
- substitutre penis envy with desire for children so identify with mother and internalise her attitudes and values
Little Hans
Saw a horse collapse in street which created his fear of being bitten by a horse
- Freud believed fear of being castrates by father due to loving mother and displaced onto horses as a defence mechanism
