3 types of core assumptions of Freud
Psychic Determinism; Symbolic Meaning; Unconscious Motivation
Assumption that all psychological events have a cause. Reasoning in what you’re doing is in unconscious mind. Free will is an illusion, and we are constantly influenced by outside factors
Psychic Determinism
Everything symbolizes something else, everything is symbolic
Symbolic Meaning
Constantly influenced by the unconscious mind, and because of that we rarely have true understanding of how you feel. Largest part in personality
Unconscious motivation
3 Levels of consciousness
Conscious, pre-conscious, unconscious
made up of thoughts, events, and feelings currently going on
Conscious
Short term memory, just below the surface of conscious
Pre-conscious
Contains things we are not aware of, and never will be aware of. Largest area, also strongest influence on your personality
Unconscious
3 agencies of the psyche
The Id, ego, superego
basic animal like instincts, immediate gratification, doesn’t like the word no, teenagers are very manipulative, operates on pleasure principle
The Id
Decision making part of personality, primary task of ego is to interact with real world and solve conflicts with the id and superego; operates on reality principle; delays gratification until an appropriate time
Ego
referred to as conscience, sense of morality, not born with sense of right ad wrong, it is learned. Pushes for perfection, must be better than everyone else. Operates on morality principle; have problems with anxiety
Superego
What is caused when ego is not powerful enough and is overrun by another of the agencies of psyche
Psychological Distress
conscious choice, purposefully forget about something until your mind is at a state to deal with it; Mostly used by younger kids
Repression
Choose not to acknowledge te truth of a painful event
Denial
Psychologically return to a younger age, typically childhood
regression
you have an anxiety forming emotion; because it is not acceptable, they transform it outwardly, and are over the top abut how they feel about something
Reaction-Formation
Take things you don’t like about yourself and put it on someone else. Only reason you do this is because you feel that way about yourself
projection
Someone tries to apply a reasonable explaination to an unreasonable behavior
Rationalization
