Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Sym: Repetitive handwriting, checking doors locked, & repeating words
Panic Disorder
sudden attacks of severe, overwhelming anxiety w/o an identifiable cause ex. choking, CP

Post Traumatic Stress DIsorder (PTSD)
continuing, disabling reaction to an excessively traumatic situation or event
Ex. war, terrorist attack, torture, rape, kidnapping, disasters
Sym.=Helplessness, disinterested in people & current events, chronic anxiety
Bipolar Disorder
chronic mood swings btw mania & depression
Mania
depressive disorder- extreme happiness…. then swings of severe depression
Schizophrenia
chronic loss of touch w/ reality
Attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
more common in boys than in girls, most children outgrow the syms. by later childhood
Tourette’s syndrome
frequent, spontaneous, involuntary movement tics (throat clearing, eye blinking)
Tx: therapy, drugs (riperidone, haldol)
Exhibitionism
obtaining power, control, & sexual arousal by exposing the genital area in public areas to strangers
Rape
obtaining power, control, & sexual arousal
Sadism
obtaining power, control & sexual arousal by deliberately causing abuse, pain, humiliation
Transsexualism
person’s belief that he/she has been assigned to the wrong sexual identity– sex changers
Transvestism
obtaining sexual arousal by wearing clothes belonging to the opposite sex or posing as someone of the opp. sex– Transvestite
Voyeurism
a practice in which an individual derives sexual pleasure from observing other people
Trichotillomania
repetitive pulling out of hair from the head
Impulse
like watching fires
Munchausen syndrome
exhibiting factitious medical or psychiatric symptoms aware that they are lying, but are unaware that their motivation is the desire for assistance, attention, pity
Fugue state
abandonment of personal identity, along w/ the memories-begins a new life at another location
Beck
depression inventory
assessing the degree of depression
Rorschach test
inkblot test-using cards, patient is asked to describe what the inkblot shapes mean to them
Hypnosis
a sleeplike trance, used to treat anxiety & phobias & to help patients stop smoking or lose weight
-Patient is able to remember
