What is self efficacy?
The belief in own competence and expectation to succeed in a particular task
What is self confidence?
A feeling of trust within a persons own abilities, qualities and judgement
What is a definition of self esteem?
The belief in ones personal worth and likelihood of succeeding
What is the self-system?
- We take on numerous roles and identities (eg, parent, teacher, friend, partner)
- Self esteem comes from our own ratings across a range of domains
- Self-perceptions are organised and assessed at multiple levels and can be influenced by culture and value systems
What is self-esteem split into? 4
The self-system splits self-esteem into 4 groups:
- Academic self-worth
- Physical self-worth
- Emotional self-worth
- Social self-worth
What can increased self esteem lead to?
Increased life satisfaction, vitality, psychological adjustment and resilience
What can decreased self esteem lead to?
- Increased trait anxiety
- Feelings of inadequacy
- Depression
How can self esteem be measured?
- Self-report questionaire
- Rosenburg Self-esteem scale (10 items on a 4 point scale)
How can sport and exercise affect self-esteem?
Sport and exercise is very public and can have strong positive or negative effects on self-perceptions and self-esteem
Self esteem is a fairly stable construct but powerful and consistent experiences can change self-esteem over time
What is the sports confidence model?
- Vealey’s model of sports confidence (2001)
- Involves state confidence (how confident you are feeing right now) and trait confidence (how confident do you typically feel)
What is the definition of sports confidence?
An athletes belief that they have the abilities to perform successfully in sport
what are the factors influencing sports confidence?
- Organisational culture (coach behaviours and level of competition)
- Demographic and personality characteristics (age, gender, optimism, perfectionism)
What are the sources of self confidence?
- Achievement (mastery, demonstration of ability)
- Self-regulation (physical and mental preparation)
- Social climate (social support, environmental comfort)
