Symptoms of depression
Mood-feelings of sadness, hopelessness.
Cognitive- pessimism, guilt, suicidal thoughts.
Behavioral- Social with-drawl, low energy
Psychological- Weight loss or gain, change in sleep patterns
Major depression vs dysthymia
Major-Short term with severe symptoms daily. Has to be for 2 weeks
Dysthymia- Long term, low grade depression. for 2 years or 1 year for teens Two months can’t go by without symptoms
Seasonal affect
Person experiences a major depression episode during the winter, due to lack of sun light
Explain mania
An expansive elevated mood
Very talkative
Flights of ideas and decreased need for sleep
Increase of impulsive behaviors
Must last for one week or hospitalized for it
Explain hypo-mania
An upbeat expansive mood, very positive, on the go, still able to function
Bipolar 1 and 2
1-Have a manic episode and a major depressive episode
2- they cycle between hypomania and major depressive
Explain cyclothemia
Will cycle between hypomania to dysthymia- must be 2 years to be diagnosed
Explain ECT/shock therapy
-Purposely giving people grandmal seizures coupled with muscle relaxers and put under.
-Done on people who are unresponsive to therapy.
-8-12 sessions over a month or so
-Breaking through depression in theory
Explain multiple personality disorder
-Severe sexual abuse before the age of 2
- use the defense mechanism of dissociation and splitting forming a new personality
- each personality has its own characteristics
Explain 5 theories of depression
-Frued, depression is anger turned inwards
-Bio,psycho,social depression is a combo of bio,psycho,social factors
- medical model depression comes from chemical imbalances in the brain
-lack of attachment causes depression
-depression is caused by real or imagined lose
Phases of schizophrenia
Prodromal- the person withdrawals from everyone including family
Active phase- they experience a psychotic break from reality
Residual phase- the symptoms often go away
What is schizophrenia
A thought disorder that 1% of the population have, split mind, split between thoughts and emotions don’t match up
Positive symptoms
Hallucinations- false perceptions may hear things
Delusions-paranoid, believing others are after them
Disorganized speech- loose association and unable to connect thoughts
Disorganized behavior, very odd and bizarre
Types of schizophrenia
1- paranoid, delusions and hallucinations
2- disorganized, have positive and negative symptoms
3- cationic, may he in a cationic stupor un responsive, waxy flexibility
4- undifferentiated, both negative and positive symptoms but don’t fall into the other 3 types
Treatment for schizophrenia
Anti-psychotic medication
Therapy very structured
Sounds games and picture identification/ nuero-plasticity
Diet
