The four D’s that help us distinguish distress from disorder are…
Duration- How long
Disturbance-Interference with life
Distress- How much you are stressed
Deviance- If it caused you to behave in unacceptable ways
Environmental Stressors?
Catastrophes- Large-scale events that are threatening (war, natural disaster)
Major life changes- Moving or going to college
Hassles- Daily annoyances of everyday life
Which part of the nervous system is responsible for responding to stress?
The sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight)
What happens when stress activates the sympathetic nervous system?
Alarm- Blood pressure/heart rate elevates (causes nausea, headaches and fever)
Resistance- Stress hormones are released to fight off the reaction. Reaction reduces and we feel less pain.
Exhaustion- The stress hormones have run out and the body shuts down.
What are the 5 different types of personality?
Type A- Successful but unsatisfied (wants to do more) Gets upset with small things and is prone to heart disease.
Type B: Not competitive or driven. They are easygoing and slow to anger. They are relaxed and at peace.
Type C- Internalize anger, be more lonely, and have a sense of despair. They are pleasant and try to keep peace.
Type D- Proned to chronic stress, anxiety, and depression. They have a fear of rejection.
Type H- Workaholics, ambitious, competitive, and hates to waste time.
Learned helplessness is…
They tend to stop trying a goal that has been blocked.
