Circumstantialities
Circumstantialities: Speech characterized by indirection and delay in reaching the point because of unnecessary detail – common in patients with obsessions
Derailment
Derailment: Speech that shifts from one subject to another that is unrelated or minimally relatable – common in schizophrenia/mania/psychosis
Flight of Ideas
Flight of Ideas: Continuous flow of accelerated speech changing from topic to topic – common in mania
Neologisms
Neologisms: Invented or distorted words – Various psychotic disorders
Incoherence
Incoherence: Speech that is incomprehensible – schizophrenia, 24hr cable news channels
Blocking
Blocking: Sudden interruption of speech in midsentence or before completion of an idea – Sudden interruption in midsentence
Confabulation
Confabulation: Fabrication of facts in response to questions to fill in gaps in memory – commonly seen in amnesia
Perseveration
Perseveration: Persistent repetition of words or ideas – persistent repetition of words or ideas
