What are strains?
They are maladaptive reactions or responses to stressors. They are also cumulative as they keep adding up/on top of each other

What are the stages of General Adaptation Syndrome? (GAS)
- Alarm: Mobilization of resources to coup with added stress
ex. You find out you have an exam, so you study (resource) - Resistance: Mobilization of only needed resources.your body tries to repair itself after the initial shock of stress.
ex. Handling and combating stress - Exhaustion: Depletion of resources (exhaustion, strain, burnout). It goes to homeostasis, but sometimes it does not
What is General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)?
Describes the physiological changes your body goes through as it responds to stress. These changes occur in stages: an alarm reaction (also called fight-or-flight), a resistance phase (in which your body recovers), and a period of exhaustion.
You have trembling hands and butterflies in your stomach prior to the start of an important exam. This is an example of what stage?

What are the two types of coping styles and the difference
Problem-Focused: This is only good if you have control over the stress. It is directed at managing/altering a problem that causes stress, such as designing a plan of action for handling a job or getting organized/creating some type of time management schedule.
Emotion-Focused: This is directed at reducing the emotional response to a problem by avoiding, minimizing, or distancing from the problem. An example would be getting social support relaxation, distraction, and breathing exercises.
What does Sonnentag’s Recovery from Work Model argue?
Ways to recover from job stress
1. Psychological detachment: “turn it off”
2. Relaxation
3. Mastery: Hobbies
4. Autonomy: Control, but there is not much evidence for this
What are some physical/task stressors?
Noise: Keeps your body alarmed/on edge
- Associated with manufacturing jobs
- Low-level noise can be distracting, such as, co-workers talking or keyboard typing.
Job Demands: Work pace, load, and hours
Types of psychological stressors are:
Perceived Control: The perception that one has the ability, resources, or opportunities to get positive outcomes or avoid negative effects through one’s own actions.
- Person has discretion over how their job tasks are performed, work schedules, etc
- Participative decision-making
Interpersonal Conflict: Negative interactions with others in the workplace
- Coworkers, supervisors, clients
Work-Family Conflict: Problems associated with balancing work and family responsibilities
