PSY1004 WEEK 1 LO: describe common methods of collecting data in developmental psychology, about children Flashcards
Include: observational studies, clinical method, psychological testing, correlational studies, neurodevelopmental/psychophysical studies
state 3 types of observational study
baby biographies, time and event sampling, event sampling
what are baby biographies
repeated observations by caregivers, case studies
what are advantages of baby biographies
gathers vast info and can lead to theory production
what are weaknesses of baby biographies
issues with generalisation, unsystematic method, retrospective
what is time and event sampling
at intervals, observations of target behaviour
what are weaknesses of time and event sampling
researcher not notice all, may simply not occur during set time period
what is event sampling
single event recorded in a time period
what is clinical method
combining observation and structured experimentation, mostly used by Piaget
define term of psychological testing
instruments for quantitative assessment of some psychological attributes of person
give examples of what psychological testing can measure
motor development,
personality development,
aptidues,
achievement,
motivation,
self-esteem,
reading ability,
IQ
why is personality difficult to define
extraversion, introversion, sociability and suggestability are social in nature, so depends on situations
state the 2 types of correlational study
concurrent study, predictive correlational study
what is correlation coefficient
statistic between +1 and -1 indicating extent to which 2 variables tend to be related or vary together. close to +1 is high positive correlation
define concurrent study
relationship between variables is measured at same time eg: how similar IQ of identical twins are, so predicting IQ of other twin can happen
what are predictive correlational studies
find whether individuals retain their relative standing/rank orders over time
