most common in the elderly
hyperparathyroidism, hypomagnesemia, hypothhyroidism, gout
why is pseudogout most common in the elderly
chondrocalcinosis increases with age
what is chondrocalcinosis
calcium pyrophosphate deposition occurs in cartilage and other soft tissues in the absence of acute inflammation
clinical presentation of pseudogout
monoarthritis - swollen painful and warm joint
knee most common
Ix in suspected pseudogout
aspirayion of synovial fluid - can see crystals
raised inflammatory markers
Mx of pseudogout
treat acute episode - NSAID/ colchicine
no prophylaxis
