what is the reason behind pruning?
thinning and cutting back is beneficial rejuvenates congested old specimens promotes growth of more flowering and fruiting wood improves shape of plant reduces risk of disease
generally, how often should you prune?
annually - unless you see dead, diseased or damaged wood, or a sucker growing from a grafted stem (remove those immediately)
when do you prune plants that flower in spring?
prune just after they have bloomed
when do you prune plants that flower in summer or autumn?
prune in early spring, just before bud break.
when are evergreens pruned?
late spring
what are three reasons for pruning?
to cut out dead, diseased or damaged wood- disease enters stem more easily
for shape and form-lightly trim to retain plants symmetry
removal of crossing or rubbing branches- rubbing branches create open wounds that let disease in so remove weakest stem, or one that has suffered most damage.
