Q

What is Giardia?

A
  • common parasite associated with hikers and campers from drinking unpurified water (cysts transmitted fecal orally).
  • causes flatulence and foul-smelling diarrhea.
  • STEATORRHEA (fatty stools)

A
  • causes severe diarrhea in HIV patients
  • modified acid-fast stain to visualize
  • infectious cysts are passed through watery stool
  • cysts composed of 4 motile trophozoites
  • comes from sewage run-offs, animal feces (fecal/water contamination).

Q

What is Microsporidiosis?

A
  • opportunistic intestinal infection that causes diarrhea and wasting in immunocompromised individuals. Actually a fungi (was thought to be a protozoan).
  • can cause cerebral microsporidiosis (spores in CSF).
  • can cause KERATO-CONJUNCTIVITIS (dry eyes, ocular pain).
18
Q

What do we have to know about Balantidium coli?

A
  • reservoir is PIGS
  • lives in large intestine
  • causes bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia, colitis, weight loss, and fever
