Anti-Helminths Flashcards

1
Q

** What is albendazole?

A
  • treats hookworms with a SINGLE DOSE (esp. for mass treating programs in developing countries), which are the leading cause of iron deficiency anemia in developing countries.

Q

** How does Benzimidazole (BZA) work?

thiabendazole, mebendazole, albendazole…

A
  • inhibits microtubule polymerization by binding to B-tubulin, thus cuasing degenerative changes in integumental and intestinal cells of helminths, resulting in immobilization and death of parasite.
  • selective and irreversible inhibition of glucose uptake by the parasite.
  • for SOIL TRANSMITTED NEMATODES (STN)

  • derived from Strep avermitilis (soil sample from a Japanese golf course).
  • Given as a single dose on EMPTY STOMACH (highly lipophilic) to clear microfilaria from the skin.
  • used for onchocerciasis (RIVER BLINDNESS), STRONGYLOIDIASIS, lymphatic filariasis, SCABIES, and cutaneous larva migrans.

Q

What are Pyrethroids (permethrin)?

A
  • OTC insect repellents that affect voltage-gated sodium channels, causing delayed repolarization by impeding sodium channel closure.
  • They paralyze the louse through hyperstimulation of the nervous system, preventing it from feeding.

Q

What is used for head lice?

A
  • spinosad
