What is a complication of entamouba histolytica infection?
trophozoites can ascend portal venous system and cause liver abscesses
What is the onset of amoebic dysentry?
subacute onset 1-3 weeks
What are the symptoms of amoebic dysentry? (4)
- diarrhoea - bloody
- abdominal pain
- weight loss
- fever
How is amoebic dysentry diagnosed?
- stool microscopy
- antigen detection
- serology
How is stool microscopy done in the case of amoebic dysentry? (2)
- detection of cysts or trophozoites
2. 3 samples from separate days
What is the problem with using serology to diagnose amoebic dysentry?
positive serology will not distinguish between acute and past infection
Who are amoebic liver abscesses seen in?
8-20 weeks after a traveller returns
What are the symptoms of amoebic liver abscess? (4)
- right upper quadrant pain - may radiate
- fever
- diarrhoea
- hepatomegaly
How is amoebic liver abscess diagnosed?
- imaging
- serology
- aspirate microscopy
How is imagine used to diagnose amoebic liver abscess?
- ultrasound , CT, MRI
- 70-80% solitary lesions
- usually in right lobe of liver
how is amoebiasis treated?
- oral metronidazole
2. paromomycin to eradicate intraluminal cysts
