Protozoa Flashcards
protozoa
- most reproduce asexually by fission, budding, or schizogogy ( div. of nucleus and cell)
- some reproduce sexually and have gametes such as malaria and plasmodium
- some have cysts and a thick coat for env. protection called trophozoite
- cyst develop into a oocyst
3 types of parasites
- protozoa ( eukaroytes)
- Metazoa aka Helminths (multicullar animals)
- Ectoparasites (head lice/mites)
Entamoeba histolytica
- protozoa
- agent of amoebic dysentery
- primary food is RBC-ulcer formation
- tryphozoite and cyst form
- high resistant of chlorine
- treated with antibiotics
Giardia lamblia
Protozoa
- beaver fever
- cause intestine upsets, nausea, cramps, diarrhea
- cyst and trophozoite
- high resistance to chlorine
- treat with antibiotics
Babesia microti
protozoa
- tick borne infection
- northwestern US
- microbes replicate in RBC, cause anemia
cryptosporidium parvum
protozoa
- obligate intracellular parasite (cow, rats, dogs, cats)
- chronic diarrhea, severe in immunocompromised
- high resistance to chlorine
- no effective treatment
Trichomonas vaginalis aka “trich”
protozoa
- transmitted from mucus membrane to mucus membrane
- No cyst, person to person, sexual transmission
- cause intense itching and inflammation of tissue
- found in vagina and male urethra
- treated with imidazoles
Acanthamoeba sp
protozoa
- grows in water, cyst in adult
- contact lens-eye loss infection
- cyst and trophozoite
Toxoplasma gondii
protozoa
- found in uncooked meat and cats
- life cycle in cat liter
- trophozoites called tachyzoites
- dangerous in pregnant women ( congenital infection in uterus)
Trypanaroma
protozoa
- blood parasite, found in s. america and africa
- vector gets into bug, through food
t. brucei gambiense/rhodesiense
cause African sleeping sickness ( fly vector)
T. cruzi
cause Chagas disease in South America ( kissing bug at nighttime around mouth)
Leishmania sp.
protozoa
-a tissue parasite, spread through sandfly
plasmodium sp
protozoa
-cause of malaria
-4 types through transmission of mosquito
falciparum- most dangerous, cause cerebral malaria, anemia, cardiovascular collapse
malariae, orale, virax
-knowlesii ( NEW): monkey malaria
symptoms of malaria
paraoxysms ( fevers and chills) caused by release of toxic breakdown where RBC rupture, anemia, blackwater fever
