Protoctists, Bacteria & Viruses Flashcards
State and explain the 3 characteristics of Protoctists.
1) Single celled + microscopic
2) Some have chloroplasts, similar to plant cells
3) Others like animal cells
Provide and evaluate the 6 different characteristics of Protoctists.
Give examples.
1) Single celled + microscopic
2) No nucleus
3) Have a circular chromosome of DNA
4) Some photosynthesise
5) Most feed of other living or dead organisms
6) eg: lactobacillus bulgaricus + pneumococcus
Provide and evaluate the 7 different characteristics of viruses.
Include examples.
1) Particles, not cells. Smaller than bacteria
2) Only reproduce inside living cells
3) Is a parasite, depends on another organism to grow + reproduce
4) Infect all types of living organisms
5) Come in many different shapes and sizes
6) No cellular structure, just protein coat around DNA or RNA
7) eg: Influenza virus, HIV, Tobacco Mosaic virus
What is the definition of a Pathogen
= organisms that cause disease
What are the Effects caused by examples of Protoctists, Bacterium & Viruses?
Protoctists = Plasmodium, causes malaria
Bacterium = Pneumococcus, causes pneumonia
Viruses = Influenza Virus, causes flu + HIV, which causes AIDS
