Levels Of Organisation Flashcards
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
Complex, include animal & plant cells
What are Prokaryotic cells?
Simpler & smaller, eg. bacteria
State the definition of an Organelle
Tiny structures in cells, only seen with powerful microscope
Explain the role of the Nucleus
Contains genetic material that controls cells activities + surrounded by it’s own membrane
Explain the role of the Cell Membrane
Forms outer surface of cell & controls what goes in + out
What is the Cytoplasm?
Gel-like substance where chemical reactions take place. Contains enzymes which control these reactions
Explain the role of the Mitochondria
Small organelles where reactions for aerobic respiration take place
Explain the role of the Ribosomes
Where proteins are made in cell
Explain the role of the Chloroplast
photosynthesis which makes food for plant happens here. Chloroplasts contain green substance called chlorophyll which is used in photosynthesis
What is a Cell Wall?
Rigid structure made of cellulose, which surrounds the cell membrane. It supports & strengthens the cell
Define what a Vacuole is.
Large organelle, contains cell sap. Helps to support the cell
State what a Tissue is.
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a function, can contains more than 1 cell type. Eg: xylem + phloem
State what an Organ is.
Group of tissues working together to perform a function, can contain more than 1 cell type. Eg: lungs + leaves of a plant
State what an Organ System is.
Organs work together to form organ systems. Each system does a different job. Eg: digestive system made up of stomach, intestines, pancreas & liver
