PROTISTS, PLANTS, and FUNGI. Flashcards
What is a protist?
A protist is an organism that belongs to the kingdom Protista.
What is a heterotroph?
A heterotroph is an organism that gets food by eating other organisms or their byproducts and that cannot make organic compounds from inorganic materials.
What does it mean if something is eukaryotic?
If a cell is eukaryotic, it eans that is has a nucleus.
What is a decomposer?
A decomposer is an organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing nutrients.
What is a parasite?
A parasite is an organism that feeds on an organism of another species (the host) and that usually harms the host; the host never benefits from the parasite.
What is a host?
A host is an organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter.
What is a nonvascular plant?
A nonvascular plant is a plant that lacks specialized conducting tissues, true roots, stems, and leaves.
What is a vascular plant?
A vascular plant is a plant that has specialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another.
What is a gymnosperm?
A gymnosperm is a woody, vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit.
What is an angiosperm?
An angiosperm is a flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit.
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process of when chloroplasts use the sun’s energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water.
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration is the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the process by which plant release water vapor into the air through stomata; also the release of water vapor into the air by other organisms.
What is tropism?
Tropism is growth of all or part of of an organism in response to an external stimulus, such as light.
What is gravitropism?
Gravitropism is plant growth in response to the direction of gravity.
