C E L L S Flashcards
Know the types of cells, know the parts of cells, know what the parts of cells do, and understand the definitions of cell parts.
What is the smallest unit that can preform all life processes?
A cell!
What is Cell Theory?
All organisms are made of one or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of all living things, and all cells come from existing cells.
What are the parts of a cell called?
Organelles.
Where is the DNA stored in a cell?
The nucleus.
What is the cell membrane?
The barrier that separates the inside of a cell, and the cell’s environment. It lets some things in, and keeps some things out.
What is a cell wall?
Cell walls are only found in plant cells, and are found outside the cell membrane. It provides support for the cell.
In plant and algae cells, where does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts!
What does the mitochondria do?
The mitochondria is the place where cellular respiration takes place. It allows the cell to use energy.
What do ribosomes do?
Ribosomes are organelles that create proteins, which are building materials for the cell.
What does the endoplasmic reticulum do?
The endoplasmic reticulum allows for the transit of cellular materials. Just like roads and highways.
What does the golgi complex do?
The golgi complex packages materials to be transported throughout the cell.
What is a vacuole?
A vacuole is a water-balooney sort of thing in a cell that, well, stores water.
What do we call the fluid that the organelles in a cell are set in?
Cytoplasm!
What do we call the organelle that digests waste products in a cell?
A lysosome! “Lysosome” kinda sounds like lysol, which is a cleaning product. Remember it like that.
Who was the guy who first described cells?
Robert Hooke. He HOOKED the idea of cells first.
