Protists Flashcards
(31 cards)
What does protista mean?
the very first.
What are heterotrophs?
organisms that consume nutrients.
What are autotrophs?
organisms that produce food through photosynthesis.
What are decomposers or parasites?
organisms that obtain food by external digestion.
What are animal like protists called?
protozoans.
How many phyla are protozoans divided into?
7
What are the four major groups of protozoans?
Flagellates, amoebas, ciliates, and sporozoans.
How do zooflagellates move?
They swim using flagella.
Where are zooflagellates found?
Lakes, streams, and within bodies of other organisms.
How do sarcodines feed and move?
pseudopods
How do ciliates feed and move?
cilia
Describe a ciliate.
A protozoan that contains a micro and macronucleus, is found in fresh and salt water, and is able to undergo conjugation.
What are Sporozoans?
Parasitic protozoans that reproduce using spores and don’t move.
Plasmodium causes what disease?
Malaria
What is Trypansoma?
a zooflagellate, resposible for African Sleeping Sickness. It’s spread from the bite of the tsetse fly.
What is Amebic dysentary?
A Prositan disease that causes sever GI distress and attacks intestines.
What is Giardia?
A zooflagellat that’s found in many types of water and forms tough cysts that can only be killed by boiling water or adding iodine.
What is trickonympha?
A protozoan that lives in the gut of termites that enables the termite to digest cellulose.
What are Euglenophytes?
Unicellular Algae that has 2 flagella, but no cell wall. If sunlight is not available, they can live as heterotrophs.
What are Dinoflagellates?
Bioluminescent/photosynthetic unicellular algae.
What are chrysophytes?
unicellular algae with gold colored chloroplasts.
What are phytoplankton?
Small, photosynthetic organisms, that live near the surface of the ocean and provide 70% of the earth’s oxygen.
What are algal blooms?
Algae that grows rapidly where sewage is discharged and give off toxins when they die. This is also known as red tide.
What is Red Algae?
Members of the phylum Rhodophyta and are very good at absorbing blue light, allowing them to live deeper than most algae.
