Protists Flashcards
What are prokaryotes?
Bacteria
What are eukaryotes?
All organisms apart from bacteria
What is the most important characteristic of prokaryotes?
They do not have a membrane-bound nucleus or organelles and have no nucleus (DNA floats in the cell - circular DNA)
What is the most important characteristic of eukaryotes?
Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and organelles bound by membranes and have a nucleus (linear DNA)
What are protists?
Eukaryotic unicellular organisms
What type of protists are there?
Animal-like
Fungus-like
Plant-like
What are protozoa?
Animal-like protists (because they can move)
Where do protozoa appear?
In ponds and wet places
What are 3 groups of protozoa (grouped by movement type)?
Amoebas - move using pseupods
Ciliates - move using cilia
Flagellates - move using flagellum
What are the organelles of protozoa?
Nucleus/nuclei - macronucleus (the bigger one) is responsible for the cell’s life
Cytopharynx - oral groove (cell eats food with this)
Food vacuole - food is taken here
Contractile vacuole - unnecessary water and waste minerals are released outside the cell (excreted)
What can you say about amoebas?
- heterotrophs
- movement: pseudopods
- the body constantly changes
What can you say about euglena?
- autotrophs
- movement: flagella
- have an eyespot for phototaxis (moves towards a light source)
- have chloroplasts for photosythesis
What can you say about paramecium?
- heterotrophs
- movement: cilia
- have a macronucleus (for life functions) and a micronucleus (for reproduction)
