Bacteria Flashcards
What is a bacterium made up of?
Cell(s)
Do bacteria need a host cell to reproduce (like viruses)?
No, bacteria are independent organisms and can reproduce by themselves
What is something that bacteria can do and viruses can’t?
Bacteria can grow and develop, while viruses can’t
Can bacteria carry out life functions, metabolism on their own?
Yes
What are the shapes of bacteria?
Cocci (spherical)
Rods
Spiral
What are the types of autotrophs?
Photoautotrophs - use the energy of light during photosynthesis (e.g. cyanobacteria, found in natural waters)
Chemoautotrophs - get energy by oxidizing inorganic compounds during chemosynthesis (e.g. deep sea vent bacteria)
What are the types of heterotrophs?
Parasites -
Decomposers (saprotrophs) - feed on dead material, provide nutrients for other organisms
Symbiotics - help plants to get enought nitrogen to build up their proteins (nitrogen fixing bacteria), other bacteria live in our bodies and they produce vitamins (Vitamin K and B)
What are pre-biotics?
Food for bacteria (substances that can only be metabolised by bacteria)
What are pro-biotics?
Live bacteria (active bacterial cultures)
What are syn-biotics?
Combination of pre-biotics and pro-biotics
