Q

Describe a protist?

A

Unicellular, have a nucleus so are eukaryotic, can only be seen via microscope, live in watery environment and live as individual cells eg. Amoeba, diatoms, euglena.
They can be multicellular eg. Slime molds or kelp

Q

Why are protists important?

A

Heterotrophic ( Protozoa) consume bacteria and other protists making components of aquatic and soil food webs
They recycle nutrients
Some cause disease- malaria, dysentery sleeping sickness

Q

How are protozoan ( animal like protists) recognised?

A

Nucleus, lack cell wall, heterotroph, move on their own, gather microbes as food.
They digest food in stomach type compartments (vacuoles)
Give of nitrogen during digestion

14
Q

Describe the characteristics of a ciliate?

A

Cilia for feeling and movement
Eat other Protozoa and bacteria- food swept into mouth moves to gullet where food vacuole is formed. Enzymes from cytoplasm digest food. Waste expelled from anal pore.
Locomotion- rotates along its long axis

15
Q

List the characteristics of the paramecium?

A

Most complex ciliate
Unicellular
Definite shape
Certain parts of the cytoplasm do different things

16
Q

Describe the structure of the paramecium?

A
Pellicle- tough outer wall
Oral groove
Gullet/ food vacuole/ contractile water vacuole
2 nuclei
Reproduces binary fission/ conjugation
17
Q

What are the 2 types of amoeba?

A

Testate- shell like covering

Naked amoeba- no covering

18
Q

Liar the characteristics of an amoeba?

A

Cell memb/ no wall- live in water or moist places
Have pseudopod- extension of cell memb + cytoplasm ( used for sliding movement and to collect food by phagocytosis, no def shape)
Reproduce binary fission
Sensitive to light and chemicals

19
Q

List the characteristics of flagellates ( smallest of the animal protists)?

A

Have flagella for movement
Live in fresh water- can be parasites eg. African sleeping sickness
Live in animals
Can be symbiotic - 1 has benefit
Mutalistic - trichonympha digest cellulose in guts of termites

20
Q

What is African sleeping sickness?

A

Tsetse fly (vector) carries trypanosoma
55 million at risk 0.5 million infected
Causes fever, anaemia, parasite invades fluid around brain and spinal cord- loc then death
Drugs effective in early stages

21
Q

How are plant like protists classified?

A
