kingdom protista Flashcards
brief about protista
-heterotrophic eukaryotes
-kingdom has no well defined boundries
-link between plant animal and fungi
-mainly aquatic
-well defined nucleus
-some have cilia or flagella
–reproduce sexually ad asexually by zygote formation and cell fusion
devision of protista
devide into 5 - cgrysophytes, dinoflagellates, euglinoids, slime moulds, protozoans
chrysophates
-desmids( golden algae , diatoms
-fresh water or marine
-float passively , microscopic-form plankton
most are photosynthetic
-diatoms:-cell wall-thin -overlap like soap box,
have silica embedded in the cell wall-diatomaceous earth-used to polish as filter
diatoms are main producers of the ocean.
dinoflagellates
-marine
-photosynthetic
-yeow , green , brown , blue , red depending on the main pigment
-cell wall-thick cellulosic
-2 flagella - one longiudinally , one transversly in a furrow
-RED DINOFLAGELLATE - EX: GONULAX-rapid multipication -make sea appear red
-release toxins which may kill sea animals
euglinoids
- fresh water-stagnent water
-instead of cell wall - protein rich layer -pellical which makes body flexible
-2 flagella -1 long 1 short - photosynthetic in the presence of sunlight or heterotrophic (predate on small organisms) in the absence of sunlight.
-PIGMENTS IDENTICLE TO HIGHER PLANTS
-EX: euglena
slime moulds
-saphrophytic protists
-body moves along decaying twigs and leaves engulfing organic matter
-form aggregation called-plasmodium -may grow upto several feet
differntiate and form fruiting bodies bearing spores at their tips
-spores-have true wall- extremely resistent survive harsh conditions
-spores -dispersed by air currents
protozoans
- heterotrophes -predetore, parasites
primitive relative of animals
-1) amoeboid protozoan : fresh water or aquatic or moist soil
-move and capture prey -pseudopodia
-some have silica in shell
-EX ; Ameoba,, entameoba (parasite )
(2)-flagellated protozoans : free living or parasitic
- have flagella
KNOWN TO CAUSE SLEEPING SICKNESS-TRYPANOSOMA
(3)ciliated protozoan - aquatic actively moving - have 1000s of cilia
cavity - gullet - opens to outside of cell surface
coordinat movement of cilia causes food in water to be steered into the gullet
-EX: PARAMECIUM
(4)-sporozoans-have onfectius spore like stage - most notorius -PLASMODIUM(malarial parasite)
