kingdom monera Flashcards
what does kingdom monera consist of ?
kingdom monera consists of only bacteria
brief about kingdom monera
most abundent microorganisms
occur almost everywhere
100’s are present in a handful of soil
what is the habitat for kingdom monera ?
they live in extreme habitats(hot springs, deserts, snow, deep oceans)
-also live as parasites
what are the 4 shapes of monera?
-coccus(round)
-bacillus(rod)
-spirillum(spring?)
-vibrium(comma)
explain about the behaviour of bacteria
bacteria are simple in structre but complex in behaviour
-as a group bacteria show extensive metabollic diversity
what is the mode of nutrietion of bacteria ?
some can be autotrophic ( chemo or photo) and some can be heterotrophic
what are the 2 types of monera ?
-archeabacteria
-eubacteria
explain about archeabacteria
-live in most harsh habitats
-if they live in extremely salty conditions -KA halophiles
-if they live in hot springs KA -thermophiles
-if they live in marshy areas-KA methenogens
-the cell wall composition of archeabacteria differs from other bacteria, which allows them to survive harsh conditions
-methenogens are present in gutt of ruminents . they help produce biogas(methane)
what the f are eubacterias ? part 1
there are thousands of eubacteria
-have a rigid cell wall , and if motile have flagellum
CYANOBACTERIA-eg : blue green algae
-have chlorophyll A similar to green pigments and are photosynthetic autotrophs
-unicellular , colonial or filamentous , freshwater/marine ,or terrestriel
-the colonies are covered by gelatenious sheath .
-they form blooms in polluted water
-some of the euacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen in special cell call as heterocysts
Eg : Nostoc and anabaena
what the f are eubacteria ?
part 2
CHEMOSYNTHETIC AUTOTROPHIC BACTERIA-oxidises varies inorganic substances such as nitites , nitrates n ammonia and use the released energy for ATP production
-play a great role in recycling nutrients like nitrogen , phosphorous , iron , and sulphur
what the f are eubacteria ?
part 3
HETEROTROPHIC BACTERIA :
-most abundent in nature
-majority are important decomposers
-helpful in making curd from milk , prodction antibiotics, fixing nitrogen in legume roots
-some are pathogens eg- cholera, typhoid , tetanus , citrus canker- are some well known diseases
htf do bacteria reproduce ?
bacteria reproduce mainly by fission
-under unfav conditions they reproduce by spores
they also reproduce by sexually -which occurs by a primitive type of DNA transfer from one bacterium to the other
what are mycoplasma ?
-are bacteria which completely lack cell wall
-smallest living cell known
-many mycoplasma are pathogens
