classification was isntinctively and was borne out of a need to use organisms for our own use

ex: bothe chlamydomones and spirogyra were under algae
it also didnt diff btwn heterotrophic and autotrophic even though they have difference in cell wall composition
ex: fungi - chitin in cell wall
