Protist, Plant, Fungi Vocab Flashcards
an organism that belongs to the kingdom Protista
Protist
an organism that gets food by eating other organisms or their byproducts and that cannot make organic compounds from inorganic materials
Heterotroph
an organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane
Eukaryote
an organism that gets energy by breaking down remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients
Decomposer
an organism that feeds on an organism of another species and that usually harms the host
Parasite
an organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter
host
a kingdom made up of non green eukaryotic organisms that have no means of movement, reproduce by using spores, and get food by breaking down substances in their surroundings and absorbing the nutrients
Fungi
a reproductive cell or multicellular structure that is resistant to stressful environmental conditions and that can develope into an adult without fusing with another cell
Spore
a mass of fungal and algal cells that grow together in a symbiotic relationship and that are usually found on rocks or trees
Lichen
the three groups of plants that lack specialized conducting tissues and tree roots, stems, and leaves
Nonvascular Plant
a plant that has specialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another
Vascular Plant
a woody vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit
Ex. Pine, cedar, spruce, fir trees
Gymnosperm
a flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit
Ex. Flowers, Maple, Oak, and fruit trees
Angiosperm
the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight to make food
Photosynthesis
the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
Cellular Respiration
