Climate Flashcards
a mixture of gases that surrounds a planet or moon
Atmosphere
the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves
Radiation
the transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas
Convection Current
the warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of Earth that occurs when water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases absorb and reradiate thermal energy
Greenhouse Effect
a gradual increase in average global temperature
Global Warming
rain, sleet, or snow that contains a high concentration of acids
Acid Precipitation
It absorbs solar ultraviolet radiation, which heats the stratosphere. It also absorbs infrared radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface, effectively trapping heat in the troposphere.
Ozone layer
the short-term state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility
Weather
the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
Climate
the distance north or south from the equator; expressed in degrees
Latitude
winds that blow mainly from one direction during a given period
Prevailing Winds
In some areas, these things block rain, so that one side of it may be rainy and the other side may be a desert. Much of airborne moisture falls as rain on the windward side of them.
Mountains
a movement of ocean water that follows a regular pattern
Ocean Currents
a large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities
Biome
a long period climate cooling during which sheets cover large areas of Earth’s surface
Ice Age
