Protist disease: Malaria Flashcards
What is Malaria?
Life threatening, parasitic disease transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes.
What is the cause of Malaria?
Unicellular protozoan parasite known as Plasmodium.
How is Malaria transmitted?
Between people through bite of a female Anopheles mosquito.
What is a vector?
A carrier
What are Anopheles mosquitoes attracted to?
CO2
Moisture
Body heat
Movement
Explain the life cycle of Malaria
1.) Female Anopheles mosquito feeds on a person infected with malaria
2.) Plasmodium or malarial parasites are sucked up with blood into the mosquito.
3.) Multiply in the digestive tract of the mosquito
4.) The parasites move to salivary glands of the mosquito.
5.) Parasites injected into the person via the saliva when the mosquito feeds.
6.) Enter the human liver and multiply.
7.) The enter the RBC’s and divide many times and feed on the cytoplasm
8.) RBC bursts, releasing releasing the parasites into the bloodstream along with toxins.
What are the physical effects of malaria?
Fever
Chills
Headache
muscle ache
vomiting
lethargic and flu-like symptoms
Very debilitating
Brain disease and severe anaemia and kidney failure
How could you die from malaria?
Anaemia
Blockage of capillaries that take blood to the brain or other vital organs
How can having a quick diagnosis help with managing malaria?
Faster the diagnosis the shorter the time a person will have the disease. Reduces parasite number.
How can you treat malaria?
Coartem
Hoe can you destruct mosquitoes to manage malaria?
1.) Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs)
Nets covering sleeping areas: physical barrier and traps and kills mosquito from insecticide.
2.) Spraying DDT
