Q

What are the characteristics of viruses?

A

1.) Extremely small
2.) Not living (can only perform reproduction)
3.) Obligate intracellular parasites (have to live inside another cell)
4.) Can only reproduce inside a living cell. (Make copies of itself using host material)
5.) Always linked with disease (host is damaged or destroyed)
6.) Can remain within an organism in a dormant state (herpes, chickenpox)
7.) Have different shapes (Polyhedral, Spherical, Helical and complex)

Q

Explain the reproduction of viruses.

A

Adsorption: Attached itself to host cell
Penetration: Injects DNA or RNA into host cell.
Latent: Replicates/copies it’s viral DNA using host cells DNA. Makes capsids from the contents of the host cell for each new virus and many new viruses are produced.
Lysis: Host cell bursts to release new viruses and the host cell dies.
