HIV Flashcards
What does your body need to fight infections?
1.) Strong immune system: many lymphocytes (WBC’s)
T-lymphocytes/ CD4 cells: start immune response
B-lymphocytes: destroys the germ
2.) Vaccinations: improve and build up IS.
What does HIV stand for?
Human immunodeficiency virus
What is the host of HIV?
Human, helper T-lymphocytes/CD4 cells
What does HIV do?
Destroys IS cells: CD4 cells
Destruction of CD4 leads to IS becoming very weak
CD4 count is less than 200ml of blood HIV progresses to AIDS.
How can you manage HIV?
Find out your HIV status
Treat with anti-retrovirals
What is the function of ARV?
Opportunistic infections are treated
IS must be strengthened
Avoid alcohol and drugs
Take care of emotional and mental health.
Stages of HIV?
1.) Acute-infection: Increase in viral load, decrease in CD4 count. May experience flu-like symptoms
Infectious
Window period: negative on HIV test
Soon after this immune response initiated: positive HIV test.
2.) Asymptomatic phase: no signs of symptoms or infection
viral load undectable
