Protiens Flashcards
What is a protein?
A very large molecule
What are the 4 parts that make up an amino acid?
Central carbon,R group, hydrogen atom and carboxyl group
What polymer is made when basic monomer units combine?
Polypeptide.
What do monomers form through a condensation reaction?
Diepeptide
What are amino acids lined by?
Peptide bonds
How do you break a peptide bond?
Hydrolysis
How many different structures are there?
4
What does protein function depend on?
Primary structure
What do the hydrogen bonds do in the secondary structure?
Keep the Helix shape
What is the structure of proteins in the tertiary structure?
The proteins are folded around each other.
What disrupts the tertiary structure and also denatures enzymes?
Temperature and pH
How do you get the quaternary structure?
Join 2 or more polypeptide chains together.
Name the 3 types of bonds in the quarternary structure
Ionic, Disulphide and Hydrogen
