Protien , Carbohydrates , Energy Flashcards
What is the definition of elemental composition?
Elements are individual chemicals. The composition of something is the elements that is made up of. For example , protein is made up of the elements carbon (C), hydrogen (H) , oxygen (O) and nitrogen (N)
What is a source ?
This is a food or something else that provides nutrients to the body. For example, milk is a source of calcium and sunlight is a source of vitamin D
What is an example of a source of protein ? (HBV)
Meat , fish , eggs , soya beans , meat alternatives
What are examples of a source of proteins? (LBV)
Peas, beans , lentils ,nuts ,cereals
What are he sources of carbohydrates ?
Sugar - cakes , sweets , soft drinks
Starch - bread , pasta , flour
Dietary fibre - whole cereals , wholemeal bread , fruit and vegetables
What is the classification of carbohydrates ?
Sugar , starch , dietary fibre
What is the classification of protein ?
High biological value (HBV) proteins - contains all or most of the essential amino acids , found in animal sources e.g meat
Low biological value (LBV) proteins - do not contain many essential amino acids , come from plant sources eg.cereals
What are the functions of protein?
Protein is needed for the g rowth and repair of all body cells (skin, blood, tissues and bones)
Necessary for the production of important substances in the body e.g hormones , enzymes and antibodies
It produces heat and energy
What are the function of carbohydrates ?
Supply most of the bodies heat
Excess carbohydrates are stored as fat , which insulates the body
Dietary fibre is vital for the movement of waste through the intestines , prevents constipation and helps prevent diseases of the bowel , eg.bowel cancer
What are the protein deficiency symptoms ?
Slow healing of wounds , hair breaking and loss , poor general health
What is classification ?
This is a way of grouping similar thing together. For example proteins are classified as high biological value proteins or low biological value proteins
What is the definition of functions ?
These are jobs a nutrient carries out in the body. For example carbohydrates provides the body its heat and energy.
What is the definition of deficiency disease?
These are diseases that occur when the body is lacking a particular nutrient over a period of time. For example , scurvy is a disease resulting from lack of vitamin C
