Carbon , oxygen ,hydrogen
What is the classification f fats?
Saturated : contains cholesterol (fat found in blood). Sat fat typically found in animal sources
Unsaturated: does not contain cholesterol . Plant , vegetable and oily fish (salmon) sources
What is an omega-3FA and its function?
Type of unsaturated fat found in oily fish , nuts , seeds.
Function:important for brain development and help to lower cholesterol levels in the blood
What does overconsumption of fat lead to ?
Leads to health problem :
1. Obesity : can lead to weight gain and obesity. Fats are high in empty kilocalories.
2.CHD (coronary heart disease) - too much cholesterol in the blood cause it to stick to artery walls. This causes pressure on the blood to pass through the arteries causing the heart to work harder. Leading to a risk of heart attacks , high blood pressure
What is the functions of lipids / fats ?
Produce heat and energy
Adipose tissue : keep the body warm (layer of ft stored under the skin)
Protects vital organ : kidney , liver
Source of fat soluble vitamins : A , D , E , K
What are the guideline to reduce fat in the diet?
Avoid high fat food and takeaways
Use low fat cooking methods
Choose low fat unprocessed meats
Choose low fat products
Reading food labels
