The amount of energy provided by food is measured in kilocalories(kcal) or kilojoules (kj)

The basal metabolic rate
What is the BMR?
The BMR is the basic amount of eagerly the body need in order to keep the body’s organs functioning while at rest. Extra energy is needed for any activities we do , such as walking , running or cycling
What is energy balance ?
Energy balance is when energy input (food) is equal to energy output (BMR plus physical activity).when this balance is maintained , people body weight remains healthy. A healthy body weight is very important factor for good health
What is an empty-calorie foods?
Empty-calorie foods are foods that contain kilocalories and produce energy but also provide a few other nutrients, e.g.chocolate,cakes ,fizzy drinks and crisps. These foods are located on the top of the food pyramid and should be avoided
What are factors affecting energy requirements?
Gender , climate , activity levels , pregnancy and breastfeeding, age and size
Why gender affects energy requirements ?
Males are generally bigger and have a higher muscle-to-fat ratio than females , so require more energy
Why does climate affect energy requirements ?
People living in colder climates need more energy than those in warmer climates
Why doe activity levels affect energy requirements?
People who are active need more energy than those who are inactive or sedentary
Why does pregnancy and breastfeeding affect energy requirements?
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a person needs more energy than normal
Why does age affect energy requirements?
Children and teenagers need more energy for their size than adults do , as they are growing
Wh does size affect energy requirements?
Smaller people require less energy than larger people
