Proteins And Enzynes Flashcards
Proteins and their function.
Protein: Function:
Enzymes = catalyse chemical reactions in a cell.
Hormones = chemicals that act as messengers and affect how living
Things develop and behave.
Antibodies = large molecules that help defend against infections.
Haemoglobin = transports oxygen in the bloodstream.
What are enzymes
Biological catalysts made up of living cells that speed up reactions. The enzyme is specific for the chemical on which it acts is called the substrate. This means that the enzyme will react to a particular substrate. When the enzyme and substrate meet it is called the active site.
Factors affecting enzyme activity.
.Most work best at a ph near 7 but others in the stomach work best in acid conditions and ones found in bone and liver work best in alkaline conditions.
. Enzymes are very sensitive to temperature and in humans they work best at body temperature (370c.)
. When a factor such as ph or temperature goes above or below the optimum the enzyme function slows down.
