Needs light energy trapped by the chloroplasts and is used to produce ATP. Water taken by the roots of the plant is split into hydrogen and oxygen using the energy in the sunlight. While the oxygen diffuses out of the cell.

The hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to form Glucose and the energy to drive this comes from ATP this is called carbon fixation.
