Proteins Flashcards
1
Q
Roles of protein
A
- Enzymes
- Transport (hemoglobin)
- Signalling (hormones)
- Contractile (musculoskeletal)
- Defense (immunity)
- Structural (hair, keratin, etc.)
2
Q
General structure
A
- Amino group
- Side chain (differs in various amino acids)
- Carboxyl group
3
Q
Classification of the 20 amino acids
A
- Non-polar sidechains (+ and - charges balance each other, generally cannot dissolve in water)
- Polar, uncharged sidechains (unbalanced distribution of + and - charges allows water to “stick” and dissolve polar substances)
- Acidic sidechains (Acidic substances lose an “acidic” proton to lower the pH of the solvent)
- Basic sidechains (Basic substances gain a proton to raise the pH of the solvent)
4
Q
Classification of proteins
A
- Simple proteins (contains only amino acid residues)
2. Conjugated proteins (contains other biomolecules)
5
Q
Structures of proteins
A
- Primary
- actual sequence of amino acids in a protein - Secondary
- the type of regular repeating structure - Tertiary
- Interaction of side chains - Quatemary
- Association of 2 or more polypeptide chains to form a multisubunit molecule
