Proteins Flashcards
What are examples of proteins and what do they do?
Enzymes- Speed up chemical reactions and remained unchanged
Hormones - Chemical messengers
Antibodies- Combine with a pathogen to destroy them and protect body from disease
Receptors- Allow signal to be transmitted across cell membrane into cell
What is the name when an enzyme binds to a substrate
enzyme-substrate complex
What does Catalase do?
Degredation reaction, breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen
What does phosphorolayse do?
Synthesises glucose-1-phosphate into starch
What does a protein shape have relation to?
It’s function eg, Antibodies are Y shaped to attach to it’s pathogen and destroy it
What does pepsin do?
Degredation, breaks down protein into peptides then amino acids
What does amylase do?
Breaks down starch into maltose sugar
What does lipase do?
Breaks down fat into glycerol and fatty acids
