Proteins Flashcards
What are some of the functions of proteins?
- Structural
- Skeletal Muscle
- Cardiac Muscle
- Cell Membrane
- Enzymes
- Hormones
- Antibodies
- Receptors
What do enzymes function as?
Enzymes function as biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions. They remain unchanged in the process and are not used up in a reaction. They lower the energy required for a reaction to take place. They are specific to certain substrates.
What does SEP stand for?
Substrate —>Enzyme—> Product
What does SAM stand for?
Starch—>Amylase—>Maltose
Degradation Reaction
Molecules are broken down
What is a degradation reaction?
Reduces the size of the molecules
What does HPCOW stand for?
Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) —>Catalase—> Oxygen + Water (O2+H2O)
What are the optimum conditions for Enzymes?
- Certain PH (acid or alkali)
- Certain Temperatures (usually body temp)
What happens to enzymes at high temperature?
At high temperatures enzymes will change shape - denatured - so will not fit the shape of the substrate
