Proteins Flashcards
How many amino acids are proteins made of?
20
What is the primary structure of protein?
Sequence of amino acids coded by DNA. Amino acids are linked together by condensation reactions that form peptide bonds.
What is the secondary structure of protein?
Hydrogen bonds between amino acids form an alpha helix or a beta pleated sheet.
What is the tertiary structure of protein?
Hydrophobic reactions between the groups in the secondary structure create disulphide bridges and ionic bonds that form a specific folded structure.
What is the quaternary structure of protein?
More than one polypeptide chain linked to form another molecule.
What is an example of globular and fibrous proteins?
Globular - enzymes
Fibrous - keratin
What is the structure of an amino acid?
Amino group, Variable (R) group, carboxylic group
