Proteins Flashcards
Essential amino acids
- Leucine
- Isoleucine
- Lysine
Non essential amino acids
- Alanine
- Arginine
- Glutamic acid
- Glutamine
High biological value proteins
Supplies the body with all the essential amino acids in the right amounts
Low biological value proteins
Lacks 1 or more essential amino acids that is required by the body
Complementary proteins & examples
Formed by combining 2 or more low biological value proteins such that the body obtains all the essential amino acids for various body functions
- baked beans & bread
- Dhal & rice
- peanut & sesame brittle
Food sources of proteins
- chickpeas (pulse)
- Cashew (nuts&seeds)
- Quinoa (grain)
- chicken (meat)
- duck egg (egg)
- cheese (dairy)
- prawn (seafood)
Functions of proteins
- growth & repair
- providing structure
- transportation of nutrients, wastes & gases
- formation of enzymes
- immunity
- energy reserve
- body movement
Growth & repair (protein)
Proteins are important to support growth & maintain good health. Proteins are also need for the body to repair & replace worn out cells & tissues
Providing structure (protein)
Proteins (Eg; collagen) are important components in the skin, nails, ligaments, muscles, tendons & other tissues. They provide structure & internal support to the human body & organs
Transportation of nutrients, wastes & gases
Proteins help transport gases, nutrients & wastes from 1 tissue to another in the body (Eg; haemoglobin)
Formation of enzymes (protein)
Enzymes are made of proteins and they are involved in chemical reactions in the body. (Eg; digestive enzymes)
Immunity (protein)
Proteins are needed to support a strong immune system. Proteins in the form of antibodies protect the body against attacks by harmful microorganisms & foreign substances. An insufficient intake or protein weakens the body, causing one to fall sick easily
Energy reserve (protein)
Proteins act as an energy reserve hence there is an insufficient intake of carbohydrates and fats from the diet. As a result, the body lacks proteins to perform other important tasks, such as building muscles, fighting diseases & regulating body processes
Body movement (protein)
Proteins make up a huge portion of the muscles in the body. All body movements are enabled through muscle contraction
