Proteins Flashcards
What are the monomers of proteins called?
amino acids
What bond is formed when two amino acids join together?
a dipeptide
What is formed when two or more amino acids are joined together?
a polypeptide
What are proteins made up of?
two or more polypeptides
What structure do amino acids have?
a carboxylic group, an amiine group, and a R group
How are amino acids linked together by?
condensation reaction
What is the primary structure of the protiens?
The sequence of amino acids
What is the secondary structure of the protiens?
polypeptide chain either coils into a alpha helix or folds into a beta pleated sheet due to the hydrogen that forms between the amino acids in the chains
What is the tertiary structure of the protiens?
the coiled or folded chain of the amono acids coils annd folds further, which means more bonds form. including hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds, disulfide brigdes.
What is the quaternary stucture of the proteins?
when two or more polypeptide chains join together
What is the test for proteins?
buiret test
What are the stages of the buiret test?
- NaOH is added to the test solution
- copper sulfate is then added to the soultion
- if the protein is present thesolution turns purple
-if there is no protein present the solution will stay blue
