proteins Flashcards
what is the test for protein
add a few drops of biuret reagent to the sample you want to test
Blue to purple if present
what are some examples of proteins
enzymes
cell membrane/in cell membrane
collagen
haemoglobin
antibodies
hormones
what are the groups that make up an amino acid
amine group
r group
carboxyl group
what does an amine group consist of
1 N AND 2 H
What does an R group consist of
C and an group
what does a carboxyl group consist of
one C pne OH and one O
describe peptide bond formation
It is between the amine group of one amino acid and the carboxyl group of another where the OH group and the H group of either bond together to form a H20 molecule release. This frees up the bond between the carbon atom and a nitrogen atom where they will bothe bond together this bond is called a peptide bond
What is the primary structure of a protein
The sequence or order of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
What is the secondary structure of a protein
-hydrogen bonds form beteeen =o and -h of nearby peptide bonds
-these Hydrogen bonds pull the primary structure into an alpha helix or a beta pleated sheet
What is the tertiary structure of a protein.
-the secondary structure folds into a more complex 3D shape pulled into position by
-hydrophobic and hydrophilic interaction
-ionic bonds
-hydrogen bonds
-disulgide bridges
What is the quaternary structure of a protein
2 or more polypeptide chains bonded together
