Lipids Flashcards
What are the two main groups of lipids
Triglycerides and phospholipids
What are the building blocks of a lipid
Fatty acid+ glycerol
Are lipids polar
No they are non polar due to the large number of carbons and hydrogens
What are the properties of a saturated lipid
Contain only C-C bonds
Can pack closely together
Linear carbon chains
Strong INTERmolecular attraction beteeen fatty acid chains
Solid at room temp
What are the properties of an unsaturated lipid
Contain 1 or more C=C bond
Non linear not packed closely together
Weaker attractions
Lower melting point
Liquid at room temperature
What shape is a saturated lipid
Linear
What shape is an unsaturated lipid
It causes bends in the chain.
What is the chemical formulae for glycerol,
C3H8O3
What is a triglyceride
It is 3 fatty acids + glycerol.
What happens during the condensation reaction to create a triglyceride
Between fatty acid + glycerol H20 taken from each bond 3H20 created
Forms ester bond between each fatty acid and glycerol
What are the properties of a lipid
Long term energy store/ fat used up when there is no more glycerol
Water proofing/they are hyrdrophobic
Insulation fats are slow conductors of heat this helps retain body heat
Buoyancy fat is less dense than water
Electrical insulator surrounds nerve increase speed of an electrical impulse
