Proteins Flashcards
What are the monomers of Proteins?
Amino acids
What is the only difference between each amino acid?
The Variable R group
What do proteins contain that carbohydrates and lipids don’t?
Nitrogen
What does the R group contain?
Carbon with the exception of glycine which is just one hydrogen atom
What bond joins two amino acids?
Peptide bond
What is the name of two amino acids joined together?
Dipeptide
What is the name of more than two amino acids joined together?
Polypeptide
What is the Primary structure?
The number and sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide can determine the 3D shape or tertiary structure. This can effect the shape of the active site in enzymes
What is the secondary structure?
Hydrogen bonds form between amino acids which causes the chain to coil into a alpha helix or fold into a beta pleated sheet. Makes the structures stable
What is the tertiary structure?
3D shape of polypeptide chain which creates a specific shape due to the sequence of amino acids in the chain. Hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds and disulphide bridges form between R groups. A change to the sequence can affect the secondary or tertiary structure as these bonds would form in different places
What is the Quaternary structure?
Proteins made of more than one polypeptide chain are joined together to create quarternary structure
