Proteins Flashcards
What elements do all proteins contain?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen
What are all amino acids made up of?
- An Amine group
- A Carboxyl group
- A side chain (variable group)
What is a chain of proteins called?
Polypeptide chain
What is the bond formed from the condensation reaction of proteins?
Peptide bond
What is the primary structure of a protein?
The sequence of amino acids in a chain
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
Folding of the primary structure to form either an α-helix (fibrous proteins) or a β-pleated sheet (globular proteins)
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
Further folding of the whole chain, which determines the proteins function
What is the quarternary structure of a protein?
More than one polypeptide chain joining together
What are the bonds in the secondary structure?
Hydrogen bonds
List the bonds from strongest to weakest in the tertiary structure
- Disulphide bonds
- Ionic bonds
- Hydrogen bonds
What are the functions of fibrous and globular proteins?
- Fibrous proteins are for structural use
- Globular proteins are for metabolic reactions
What is the biochemical test for proteins?
The biuret test: add biuret solution (Potassium Hydroxide and Copper Sulfate) to the sample and a lilac colour is a positive test
