Enzyme Inhibition Flashcards
What is an inhibitor?
A substance that decreases the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction and stopping it
What are the two types of inhibitors?
- Competitive
- Non-Competitive
What does a competitive inhibitor do?
It attached itself to an active site so that it occupies it and no ES complexes can be formed
What does a non-competitive inhibitor do?
It attaches itself to an alternate site of the enzyme, altering the tertiary structure and thus the active site so it is no longer complimentary
What is an allosteric region?
An alternate region of an enzyme where non-competitive inhibitors bind too
What happens to the rate after increasing the substrate concentration, with a non-competitive inhibitor?
Thr effect of the inhibitor cannot be overcome by increasing the substrate concentration
What happens to the rate after increasing the substrate concentration, with a competitive inhibitor?
The substrates overcome the inhibitors and the rate can achieve maximum
