Proteins 1.2 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Proteome
A
The entire set of proteins expressed by a genome.
2
Q
Why is the proteome larger than the genome
A
Due to alternative RNA splicing
3
Q
What do non transcribed DNA do
A
Regulatory sequences, expression control, telomeric ends, “junk”
4
Q
What are factors that affect what type of protein is expressed
A
- Metabolic activity (can change with age, dormancy state etc.)
- Cellular stress (extremes of temperature, pH, exposure to toxins)
- Response to signalling molecules (I.e hormones)
- Disease
5
Q
What is the Endoplasmic reticulum
A
Structure which forms a network of membrane tubules continuous with the nucleus membrane
6
Q
What are non-coding RNA genes
A
Genes that do not code for proteins, these include those transcribed to produce tRNA, rRNA and RNA molecules that control the expression of other genes
