Protein Turnover, Nitrogen Flashcards
Can proteins from the diet be stored?
No, only the carbons liberated from the AAs.
What are the three basic steps in nitrogen metabolism?
- Transfer N to a common carrier
- Generate ammonia in liver
- Incorporate ammonia into urea
What is PLP and what is it used for? What vitamin is it derived from?
Pyridoxal phosphate - a cofactor for aminotransferases. Derived from B6
What do aminotransferases do?
Transfer animo groups to carrier AAs.
What are the three main nitrogen carriers and what do they arise from?
alpha-KG + N –> glutamate
OAA + N –> aspartate
pyruvate + N –> alanine
What is the subcellular location of glutamate DH?
Mitochondria
How is glutamate DH regulated?
GTP, ATP inhibit, ADP, GDP activate.
What is the major nitrogen carrier in the blood?
Glutamine.
In which organ does the glutamine synthase reaction occur?
High activity in liver.
Also in brain, muscle, lungs, adipose
What is the limiting step of the urea cycle?
Carbamoyl phosphate synthesis.
Do you know the urea cycle?
Yes or no.
